Proper waste classification is a vital factor for both the environment and the economy within the broader waste management process. It is the legal obligation of waste producers to handle the waste generated by their operations with due diligence.

The legal framework governing the classification of waste as hazardous or non-hazardous involves the Waste Framework Directive, the CLP Regulation (1272/2008) of the European Parliament and Council on the classification, labeling, and packaging of substances and mixtures, and the Commission Regulation (EU) № 1357/2014.
