Polyeco in a JV with Tredi detoxifies Ethiopia from 450 tons of unwanted pesticides.

The disposal and safeguarding of obsolete pesticides and other associated hazardous chemicals was crucial for Ethiopia in order to meets its targets set in the National Implementation Plan for Stockholm convention.

The project of safety management, transportation and disposal of obsolete pesticides and other associated waste in Ethiopia was awarded by the Ministry of Agriculture to the international joint venture Polyeco S.A. – Tredi S.A. within the context of the Participation of Ethiopia in The Africa Stockpiles Programme (ASP) coordinated by MoA and funded by the World Bank.

The products and services provided by the JV Polyeco SA-Tredi S.A. under this project were:

  • The provision of suitable UN packaging equipment and consumables for collection, repackaging, labelling and transporting of 450 tons of expired pesticides and other associated chemical waste stored in different residential areas of Ethiopia.
  • The packaging of 186 tons of obsolete pesticides in the warehouses of the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa in Mekele.
  • The exportation from Ethiopia in accordance to Basel Convention for final disposal of 450 tons of obsolete pesticides in high temperature licensed incineration plans in Sweden and France.
