POLYECO S.A. has successfully completed the safeguarding and export of obsolete pesticides from Ecuador to Europe for final destruction, at a licenced high temperature incineration facility in Sweden. The project was awarded through international tendering to POLYECO SA by The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations in May 2015. Waste was safely exported from the country in October 2015. The safeguarding operations were conducted in cooperation with Agrocalidad, who had previously identified the national stockpile of obsolete pesticides in the country.
POLYECO SA provided UN approved packaging,and other equipment and consumables for the collection, repackaging, labelling and transportation of waste. POLYECO staff repacked and exported the obsolete pesticides for final disposal in accordance to the Basel Convention. Finally, experienced personnel decontaminated the pesticide’s temporary storage area.
This project was a great success for Ecuador, which was striving to export obsolete pesticides from the country for many years in order to meet its national targets based on the Stockholm convention. This project leads the way for the removal of POPs and other hazardous waste from the country.
POLYECO S.A. has been awarded through an international Tendering procedure, a 3-year contract with Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (ORPIC). Following the successful implementation of management of more than 1.500 tn of hazardous catalysts in ORPIC, POLYECO S.A. is now undertaking the sustainable management of all hazardous waste streams generated from the refinery for the next years. The Project Scope of works comprises several chemical waste streams including hazardous adsorbents, spent catalysts, batteries and other hazardous residues generated from ORPIC operations. Their disposal will be conducted in licensed hazardous waste facilities in EU, in compliance with Basel Convention specifications and EU Regulations.

Polyeco in a JV with Tredi detoxifies Ethiopia from 450 tons of unwanted pesticides.
The disposal and safeguarding of obsolete pesticides and other associated hazardous chemicals was crucial for Ethiopia in order to meets its targets set in the National Implementation Plan for Stockholm convention.
The project of safety management, transportation and disposal of obsolete pesticides and other associated waste in Ethiopia was awarded by the Ministry of Agriculture to the international joint venture Polyeco S.A. – Tredi S.A. within the context of the Participation of Ethiopia in The Africa Stockpiles Programme (ASP) coordinated by MoA and funded by the World Bank.
The products and services provided by the JV Polyeco SA-Tredi SA under this project were :
(A) The provision of suitable UN packaging equipment and consumables for collection, repackaging, labelling and transporting of 450 tons of expired pesticides and other associated chemical waste stored in different residential areas of Ethiopia.
(B) The packaging of 186 tons of obsolete pesticides in the warehouses of the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa in Mekele.
c) The exportation from Ethiopia in accordance to Basel Convention for final disposal of 450 tons of obsolete pesticides in high temperature licensed incineration plans in Sweden and France.
POLYECO SA successfully completed the safe emptying and cleaning of tanks and piping, from four hazardous chemicals, at the facilities of BSH in Greece. The hazardous waste that was produced during project execution, was managed in the most environmentally friendly and efficient way, and safely disposed of.
The operation took place in a BSH deactivated production line, which used to produce polyurethane foam for refrigerators’ insulation purposes, along with the refrigerant system.

The project was extremely complex and high demanding due to the various hazards that each four materials posed, and as a result, each of them required specific management and handling, as well as separate final disposal method.
Our head of Experts/HazMat Team, after conducting risk assessment for each of the material existing in the tanks and piping systems, formulated the respective management and handling plan, which of course included all precautionary-safety measures for the personal protection of the team, and also for the protection and safety of existing facilities.

Kosovo has a history of poor environmental practices, which are a major concern for public health and the environment. Air pollution, particularly from the dust generated by power stations and ash dumps, is a critical problem and waste waters from the mining and power operations were heavily polluted.
“The Greek company “Environmental Protection Engineering SA” holding company of Polyeco S.A. following international good practice and innovative procedures successfully completed the cleanup project of the power plant in Kosovo (Kosovo Energy Corporation-KEK), which was funded by the World Bank. Under the cleanup project, EPE managed the containment, removal, packaging, and export from site, of the following waste:
(a) 15.000 tons of phenolic liquid waste by employing the Fenton’s reaction,
(b) Treatment of chemicals such as tars, oily compounds including waste oil, ammonia, benzene and methanol
(c) The soil remediation, precipitation of metals and treatment of produced filter cake
(d) The cleaning of around 20 tanks, the treatment and removal of 20.000 tons of hazardous liquid and solid waste, including organic phenolic liquids and sludge of variable viscosities.
(e) The on-site treatment of low contaminated waste, solvents, dispropylether and tar sludge from various tanks at the old lignite gasification plant of KEK as well as the packaging of highly contaminated waste.
The issuance of bilateral agreements between Kosovo and Sweden / Belgium for the export and disposal of 5.000 of hazardous liquid and solid waste in accordance with the Basel Convention obtained with the efforts of the company was a great achievement. Polyeco SA participates in a 3 year project No GF/MON/09/01 in Mongolia, as subcontractor of the Italian company Sea Marconi. The project title is ‘Non-combustion decontamination technology for equipment containing PCB oil – Capacity Building for the environmentally sound PCB’s management and disposal’ and is funded by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
The project includes the provision of treatment technology for the on-site treatment of 2000 tons of PCB oils, training on the operation of the treatment facility and the sound management of the produced hazardous waste.
Polyeco SA has successfully completed the transportation of treatment equipment and chemicals to Mongolia and the packaging, labeling and temporary storage of the generated waste. Waste will be soon exported in accordance with the Basel Convention to Greece for treatment at Polyeco Aspropyrgos facility.
